Semi Permanent Eyebrows

I have mentioned a few dozen (million) times here that i have been eyebrow challenged for as long as i can remember. Having over plucked my eyebrows to a thin dark line in the 90's they just never grew back. The thin dark arch of a line was just horrendous and unbelievably unflattering.
As time moved on and so did eyebrow trends, to bigger bushier, darker and fuller style brows i tried to grow them back. But nothing happened. A few stragglers, i managed to grow a shape of a hook but that was it.
I purchased every eyebrow growing serum and potion on the market in a bid for better brows. I spent hundreds in the hope they would stimulate growth. But nada.. Nothing more than a few wobbly hairs in pretty much the wrong place.

Having accepted my eyebrow fate i have then spent the past 11 years trialling every eyebrow product on the market. Pencils, powders, gels, creams, you name it i've tried it in every brand going. Some more successful than others ( FYI Eyelure is my favourite eyebrow pencil) but there's just no denying the fact that when at that glorious time of day when I wash my makeup off, it was depressing to see no brows looking back at me. Just a thin scraggly line.
Plus the times when you go swimming, wear a hat or accidentally scratch your brow and suddenly you have a smudged brow that's missing parts.

It may sound silly to some, but i never felt like me when i didn't have my bros drawn on. Every morning the first thing i'd do would be cleanse and then draw my brows in. I just couldn't stand my face without them. My face feels like me again as soon as brows are present.

Eyebrows really do emphasise the features and frame the face. Without them i just feel like a big potato head.

Semi permanent brows were really starting to take off a couple of years ago, but at £250+ it always seemed like something unobtainable for me.
Back in June a good friend of mine booked herself in after her sister had had her brows done at Beauty Within Caerphilly. She was blown away at how good they were and booked herself in immediately. After a cuppa and a chat and me unveiling my lack of brows to her (which i never do with anyone other than my husband and the kids) she called the salon and booked me in there and then and paid my deposit (i know.. how kind is she!!) My appointment was a few months away as i had summer to get through but it was booked. I was going to have my brows sorted.

As my appointment arrived I was excited to finally have brows.
Michelle and the ladies at Beauty Withing were wonderful, putting any worries (not that i had any, i was just excited for brows!) and my mind at ease. Michelle's expertise shone, she is an absolute pro and i happily put my brows in her hands.

The Procedure

So what is Semi-permenant makeup?
Pigment is implanted into the dermal layer of the skin using a state-of-the-art machine designed specifically for the cosmetic market. These digital systems are very different to conventional machines and inks used in conventional tattoo studios.
The treatment lasts around 1-2 years and is carried out in accordance with strict health and safety protocols using single use sterile needle cartridges. Your technician will offer you the very best treatment, which will be both subtle and effective.
So like a tattoo but semi permanent makeup doesn't penetrate as deep as a traditional tattoo, hence why it isn't forever.
The procedure can take about 2 hours from start to finish.
First up a numbing gel is applied to the brows and left to set in for half an hour.
Looking ever so attractive with my numbing gel and cling film

After the numbing gel has sunk in and eyebrows are comfortably numb Michelle gets to drawing out your perfect brow, working with what you have and adapting them to give you the perfect shape brow for your face. Michelle took a great deal of time and patience to get the shape sketched just right before setting to it with the needle.
Its worth noting here, as this was a major plus point for me, that they do not take away any brow hair you may have, they keep what you have as opposed to taking it all off and leaving just a drawn on line, which i was totally against as i'd seen with other semi permanent makeup artists do. Michelle doesn't do that. She shapes what you have and works with it instead of removing it, which was perfect and just what i wanted.
She also talked through the colours with me, and what she had decided would be best for me and explained the fade down period in the next 4 weeks.
We went for a 3/4 dark brown with a 1/4 golden in there for a natural look and also to make sure the fade out wasn't to beige.
By this point the numbing gel is applied again to see you through the next stage where Michelle sets to drawing your new brows with the needle application.

I wanted to mention as its the thing i've been asked the most, but it didn't hurt at all, i was comfortable and there was no pain at all. Just some light pressure on the brows and forehead ( i did have a headache afterwards but i'm super sensitive to headaches and i think it was just from all the excitement and having my head faffed with 😂 I'm often the same from the hairdressers)
The procedure took another hour or so of individual hair light strokes being drawn in, evaluated and then more done again. Michelle would sit be up and look at the brows and then carry on until she was completely happy.
The area stays numb through out so I didn't feel a thing. She will also only do as much as she feels the skin can take as, even though you can't feel a thing, the skin is still undergoing a bit of stress.

The results

I walked out feeling on cloud 9. I had eyebrows for the first time in years .
We went for a natural shape that can be made bolder in my next appointment(more about that in a mo). The arch and colour are natural and the shape is simple but such a huge improvement on before.

Before And After

This is straight after i got home on the day, no redness and no pain.
They cleared straight away just leaving great brows.

I was simply amazed at my brows and instantly loved them. For me waking up each day with brows is amazing, having them still there after a shower and not washing off again is just the best. I feel happy to go makeup free (like above) now i have my brows it just makes things so much easier. It also knocks about 5 minutes off my makeup routine as my brows were the one thing that always always took the longest (and never ever turned out the same each day)

Aftercare

Michelle talks you through everything and explains for the rest of the day you dab/bathe the brows every hour or so with sterile water and a cotton pad.
Then each morning and night for the next week you apply the provided barrier gel to keep the brows protected against the elements and any water/makeup etc. This helps them retrain their colour.
Fading is to be expected in the next four weeks and they can be known to fade a little patchy. This is all part of the process.
I have my appointment for Oct 12th where i will have round 2 of the procedure.
This will be where we decide if i want to go bolder or darker and filling of any patches.

So yes, its fair to say I am supremely pleased so far with the results, i shall keep you posted on my top up next month too but i can see this being something i keep up.
It gives me the confidence i lacked, it makes me feel prettier and that in turn makes me happier.

Do you have a thing for good brows like i do?

If you're in the south wales area i highly recommend Beauty Within Caerphilly, their expertise are second to none and i am super happy with my results.

#Passion4Fashion linkup

What a week! Kids are back in school and it has been go go go here. I always feel like summer should be relaxing but it felt full on and exhausting if i'm honest and left me feeling completely drained. This week i've been focusing on getting a bit of me back, as an Insta friend mentioned to me  "You can't pour from an empty cup" And my cup was most definitely bone dry.  So i've been trying to fit in filling it back up a bit one drop at a time this week, amongst everything else of course.

I treated myself to this dress and cardigan last week on my son's 7th birthday, Now i know traditionally on someones birthday they get the presents but each year on my sons birthday i always treat myself to a new dress, its become a little tradition of mine now, y'know seeing as i carried him for 9 months, gave birth and then kept him fed and watered for the past now 7 years, i think i deserve a treat too, haha! Well that's my theory and i'm sticking to it anyway 😂
Since having the cardigan i've worn it a lot, its the perfect chuck on item and the blush pink acts as a wonderful neutral. The dress is light and floaty and overall its just a damn comfy outfit that is a pleasure to wear.

10 Blogging tips for complete Newbies

I've been asked multiple times across social media for advice and tips on starting a blog and I always promise people i will write this post, but then something always comes up and it just hasn't materialised. It could also be becasue i never class myself as a professional blogger. I'm just a girl stood in front of a laptop writing asking you all to like her...😂 No but seriously i just love blogging.
I'm still small in comparison to the big mainstream bloggers, but as i always tell people starting out, don't let the numbers put you off, your voice is your voice and nobody else's so go for it.
Plus the one thing i do have is longevity having been around this ol' blogging block for 6 years now.
So i'm taking some of my own advice and here it is.. A quick beginners guide to blogging.

My beginnings
I started this blog over 6 years ago as a creative outlet for my fashion loving heart.
Neo, my son, was 10 months old and i felt like i needed to get back a little bit of me back, in the sense of motherhood can be all consuming and wonderful, but i wanted to still be me too, and getting up each day and getting dressed in clothes i loved was my way of doing that.

Style has always been my creative outlet, putting a great outfit together is my equivalent of painting a wonderful picture. I cant paint for shit, so this is my canvas and paints.

Blogging seemed like a great platform to share my love with like minded ladies and the whole blogging world was just taking off in the UK, so i began (after my sister nagged me to do it and literally set me up ready to write).
In 6 years i've worked with some amazing brands, met so many wonderful women and made some actual real life friends too.
Its been a journey that i have absolutely loved and never, not once, have i ever wanted to quit, which actually speaks volumes as i will happily walk away from anything that doesn't satisfy me.

So first off YAY you want to start?
Lets do this:

1. Just Do it

It sounds silly but you will think of a thousand reasons why you shouldn't, but just put those aside, no one would ever do anything in life if they only thought of the negative.
Just remember: Nobody has your voice so just use it

2. Choose Your Platform

There are a number of blogging platforms and websites to choose from as your base such as
Blogger
Wordpress
SquareSpace
Wix
I an only recommend Blogger as its always been the platform i've used.
Its always worked perfectly for what i need and because it is google owned, it words seamlessly with your gmail account, making everything nice and easy in one place.
I find blogger as a whole very easy to navigate. In "compose" you can write and add your photos just like a word document.. nice and easy.
However if you fancy using Wordpress, which i do hear great things about, then don't be scared to reach out to someone and ask for help.

3.Choose Your Blog Name

Quite the important step. It is something that will potentially be with your for sometime and represent you as a brand. It can be something that instantly draws people in or attract your tribe by word association (clothes, style food). For me it was the personal route and my name is right there so people know who i am straight from the off. It a personal thing so think it over before you commit. i actually started with a different name which i hated and changed after 11months to Rachel The Hat and have been happy ever since.

4. Content

Super important (obvs) But know what you want to primarily blog about. Yes you may want to dabble in a bit of this and a bit of that, but know your voice and what your niche is.
Plan content, brainstorm some ideas, take inspiration from others and make some lists of blog ideas that you would want to read yourself. That way you know someone will want to read them too.

I'm going to pile in to this bracket photos too.. Its the one thing people say to be all the time
"i cant pose for photos, how do you do it?" Well let me tell you my friends, i used to look a complete plonker when i posed for photos, so much so that for my wedding photos i asked out photographer to just capture action shots and casual shots rather than posed shots as i hated having my photo taken that much. I used to do this crazy thing with my eyebrows raised and a big uncomfortable cheesy grin.. i looked bizarre to say the least.

Trust me when i say this, the more photographs you take the easier it will be. Take some practice shots, see which expressions you like in the photos, which is your best side (i'm fully aware that i sound like a tosser when i say that, but it is true) and which angles show off the clothes best (this is of course if you are wanting to blog about style and fashion), this will all help create better photos. After attempting to do it all myself at the begining and realising quickly that it was too difficult i enroled the husband, he was always supportive and told me to lower my eyebrows when i basically had my crazy face on.
Alternatively opt for a tripod and remote and just start shooting. The setup can be a little timely and the shots can be trickier but its worth taking a few hours to become acqauinted with the set up in order for you to take some great pics going forward.

Take lots of photos, you may use just 6-12 per blog post out of hundreds, but its better to have too many and then pick the ones that you are most happy with.

5. Write from the Heart

Nobody has your voice, it is only yours, and that is what people will tune in to hear. There are plenty of professional editorials and when people want to read that style they know where to seek that out. Just be you. Had a crappy day? Write about it. Loved your outfit because the lady in the supermarket commented on it? Write it.. People love to relate and read about the real you. Deciding what you want to share online may be a good thing to. I never thought about it at the beginning, but these days as blogs grow it may be worth you considering.
But get creative. Have fun with your phone taking photos and start writing around it.

6. Get Social

Micro blogging on platforms such as Instagram has become such an important part of connecting with others. It also gives readers an idea of what your blog is about.
Set up your social accounts with the same name as your blog, use the same profile picture throughout also so you are instantly recognisable..
Now there are obviously lots of social media platforms out there, but to bgein with just focus on one or two that you are comfortable with so you don't feel overwhelmed as it can often be a lot to do. I still only really stick to Instgram and Twitter even now as they are the two i prefer. I lvoe IG as you all know so i pour most of my energies in to this platform.
Post regularly on your social media. For me on Instagram i post the same time each day so people will know when to expect your post.
Be sure to follow others who are doing similar, find new friends, comment, like and reply.
Build up the camaraderie and community with other like minded ladies.

7. Choose A Blogging Design

Once you're up and running and have your corner of the world wide web you can start thinking of design. I say to think of this after going live as i know some people put it off on the back of "when i get the perfectly designed blog i'll start" when in reality that never comes. Start blogging then decide what you want. Its like living in a new house a little while first before deciding how to decorate it.
I Highly recommend Pipdig for templates and implementation. I use them and they are fantastic. I am just looking at a new design as i type.. so keep and eye out for that.
The great thing is they aren't expensive and they will literally get it up and running for you. Theres no need to spend hundreds on a design. These at Pipdig are perfect.

8. Post Regularly

Like with social media make sure you have regular blog posts going live. Even if its just once a week to begin with (although i assure you once you start you will want to log all the time 😁.. it should come with a warning: Blogging Highly Addictive!) make sure you get a post live. Appearing in peoples inboxes/ blog feeds is important as you want your presence to be made and your name to not be forgotten in a sea of other blogs.

9. Join Link Up parties

Link up parties are a great way to get your blog post out there. I host one every friday and have 100 ladies join and post their links. Its easy to do, and you get to meet new bloggers and they get to meet you too.

10. Have FUN!

The one thing i hear all the time is how people don't think their blog will be good enough/professional enough or polished, how their photos are only taken on their phones and therefore wont be amazing.
To this i say, stop putting barriers in your own way! Yes some blogs who have immaculate photos and enviable lives portrayed, which is great, but there is also a market for ladies who just want to post online and chat to other like minded people.
You are your unique selling point... you are one of a kind, just go for it.
Blogging should be enjoyable, it should be fun and if it turns in to a career that you love, then great! But just enjoy the journey. Start at the beginning, make connections, have fun, enjoy capturing moments of your life and like i said, just go for it!

My Summer Outfits (& #Passion4Fashion Linkup!)

The last couple of weeks we have had summer return here in Blighty. Its been nice to have the last throws of summer and get a little more wear out of those neglected summer dresses. But i would be lying if i said i was loving it because, if i'm totally honest, i am soooo done with summer dressing.
Roll on Autumn, i am ready for you. By this time in the year i always long for knitwear, boots and amazing coats. All in good time i know, but patience was never my strong point. So i'm sat typing this blog in a lovely red sweater, probably ever so slightly preemptive as its not actually that chilly (i've opened the windows and doors though to compensate 😉).
Short and sweet from me today as its still the summer holidays here and we have places to go on our last few days of freedom. (it was also my sweet babies 7th birthday yesterday.. oh where has the time gone?!)

If you want to shop these outfits most of them can be found in the new -Shop My Look- page that i try and update daily!

What are you looking forward to most in Autumn?
Knitwear, boots, a new coat or pumpkin spice lates?
