Faux Shearling Coats for Cold Wintery Days ( & #Passion4fashion Linkup!)

The temperatures have plummeted here this past week, barely touching double figures at all, which means i need all the warm stuff constantly. I am one of those people who really feels the cold so layers, knitwear and cosy coats are an absolute must for my existence through winter.
And what better way to stay warm but in a (Faux) Shearling Coat.
Now these come back year after year, they work so well as a casual weekend coat with just a little bit of a retro touch. The Shearling aviator is perfect for those days when your biker jacket has to be left on the hook for the fear of freezing your boobs off. Yep.. when i get cold, it aint pretty.
Mine here is not actually mine (wahahaha). Perks of having a teenage stepdaughter who has finally gotten to the age/size where you can steal each others clothes. Its ok, it works both ways. I did have a certain bomber jacket that now seems to have been accosted by her, so fairs fair.
Sharing is caring after all ;)

So i went full on layers for this cold early morning. Blogger woes, I actually forgot, as i do every single winter, how hard it is to get photos in good light. This was done at 7.15 in the morning at it wasn't even properly light yet. But Salvatore had to be on his way to work, and after work (if hes home) is just not going to happen as its dark by about 4.45. Blogger woes indeed.

Just a quick sidenote on something that is truly noteworthy:
These Levi's (Mile High Super Skinny) hold their shape like no other! I am so so impressed by them and how 'skinny' they stay through multiple wears and no saggy knees and they seem to work with you, lunges and all. Amazing!

Some rather marvellous Shearling coat options

These two traditional are my absolute favourites, both under £50 and both perfect for winter. This is the type of coat you would look forward to pulling out each winter.

The Perfect Top to Rock this Festive Season

Ok ladies, I'm just putting this out there because the festive season will be upon us all in a blink of an eye. I don't know about you but November flies by at a rate of knots and before you know it it's sparkles, Christmas puddings and hangovers left right and centre.

For me this time of year is the absolute craziest, what with multiple children's Christmas concerts, works doo's, Christmas shindigs and of course the shopping for presents.
Having outfits on hand for such occasions is of vital importance.
Especially if like me you don't have more than a moment to chuck something on.

Between now and the first of January I have my birthday(yay), a wedding, my step sons birthday, Christmas party, Christmas day and of course New Years celebrations.
That's a lot of shindigs and I'm no major socialite, I can only imagine what other ladies have going on this time of year. Its enough to make your head spin!

So i have a clothing suggestion to make life easier.
You know my theory of making an item of clothing work hard for you. That if it gets added in to the wardrobe, you have to invisage your self wearing it multiple times to justify the purchase.
I've never done this in the past, hence why i ended up with so many redundant party frocks that never saw the light of day after their first  and only outing; that's the problem with dresses, they're easily spotted as being the same dress you wore to the last doo, when we put pics up on our Facebook we want to look like we've at least changed between functions.
I get it, i really do. Us ladies like to look good.
So this year I'm boxing clever.
I'm thinking a Special Top to see me through the festive season and beyond.
Something like this beautiful Sparkle Cold Shoulder top from Coast

Or in fact any in the main image (which incidentally are all from Coast.. they've got the Festive top nailed this year, i tell ya!)

Why I hear you ask, should we go for a top and not a dress?

Its simple mathematics, a remix equation.

Think of all the wears you will get out of this pretty top versus one christmas dress.

I love to remix, you know that what with my Capsule Wardobe. I love a workhorse of a piece. And this kind of top, promises to be just that.

I've included above all the ways I'm thinking of remixing this Festive top to see me through multiple occasions. Many of the bottom pieces I have similar already, making this even more of a viable option.

Lets take a closer look

Winter wedding formula:

I just love this outfit for a winter wedding. Pretty, covered against the cold, and still so occasion perfect. The sparkle of the top and the fullness of the skirt will make any women feel like a princess for the day.

Christmas Party Formula:

We want lace, we want sparkle and we want high heels for our Christmas party outfit. This is ideal for those Christmas meals/shows or evenings out.  The green in the skirt is perfect for the festive season.

Christmas Concert Formula:

Bringing a bit of sparkle in the day, because if you can't at Christmas, when can you? But it really works so well paired down this time with some skinny jeans (use black or dark indigo for a chic look) and some flats for running after your little one dressed as a donkey.

Evening out for NYE or Birthday celebrations for me:

Winter brings out the faux leather lover in me. Mixing textures with the knit, the sequins and leather this outfit is full of character and fun!

Christmas Day Formula:

Christmas day usually sees me cooking and playing on the floor with my son, comfort doesn't have to be dowdy. I love to dress up on Christmas day, I legitimately feel its the one day you can walk around your house with all the sparkle and your slippers. So the cold shoulder sparkle sweater is perfect, bringing a bit of glamour but with the berry faux leather trousers, you're still able to crawl around and play and cook (faux leather trousers= wipe clean: Result!)

This beautiful little top could really rock your socks off all season long.

So what do you think?
A beautiful remixable top to see you through the festive season.
Would it work for you?

Ladies, Lets Stand Together.. A heartfelt talk on being scrutinised and judged.

I try to keep this blog here a super happy place. It's not hard as ladies, you really are a fantastic bunch who support, encourage and impart compliments with ease. It's one of the many things I love about blogging: its a happy, open minded, positive environment.

There are a few things in life I am proud of, first would be my family of course, but second is my positivity towards others. I am a people-person and enjoy talking, helping and listening to others.
I strongly believe in raising others up, passing out compliments to anyone, and speaking kind words on a daily basis.
I am the person you will see in the supermarket that compliments you on your coat. I am the lady who tells you your hair looks great today, I am that person who notices and speaks it.

Why? Because I truly believe that imparting kind words to a fellow human is a great thing to do. It may life their mood, brighten their day or just make them smile. We've all been there, when someones said "oh i do like your dress" or "you look great today". How did it make you feel?
I know it always gives me the warm and fuzzies to think that person took a moment out of their day to say something nice.. to impart kind words to me.. That's pretty awesome wouldn't you agree?
Kind words cost nothing after all.

I guess because I am this type of person, it makes dealing with whats been going on harder for me, like i can't seem to comprehend why anyone would do that. Resulting in anger, tears and frustration.

The reason I'm writing this is to build awareness of these feelings and hopefully unite us ladies together. It's not a pity party for one (i've had that already don't worry, wine in hand singing "All by myseeellffff" at the top of my voice.. I'm over it and ready to positive party;)

To put a little context to this:
Lately, 'In Real Life' ( as opposed to the blogasphere) I've been experiencing some pretty bad scrutiny. Fellow women have been scrutinising my appearance, passing comment on my wearing of makeup, and multiple general 'digs'. This has been both to my face and behind my back.

Why would women do this to other women?

We all walk a tricky path juggling SO much the majority of the time, why on earth would someone think its ok to judge another on such personal things?
The judgements on me went like this:
"Why is she always dressed up"
"Who does she think she is?"
"Well she wears a face full of makeup all the time, She would never go out without it"
"Its false advertising if you ask me"
" Her boobs must be tiny!"
" Shes vain, and the job she does is just shallow"

Again Why? Why would anyone feel the need to berate another women and make them feel bad?
It honestly baffles me as i strongly believe we are all in this together.
Strong women raise other women up and believe in each other.
This is not helpful or productive critiquing.
This is just mean.

When i was a child my mum used to say "If you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all"
But in a world of free speech i can understand people wanting to express themselves, but sit back and think.. Is saying anything derogatory actually productive?

After hitting a bit of a low, I gave in to the insults.
I sat in my saggy jogging bottoms, with no makeup and hair not done, all to make a point that no, i don't need make-up or nice clothes to go out. That underneath it all I am who I am.
Did i feel better? No, no i did not.
Why should i have to justify myself, my looks, my ways to anyone? Why do i have to be condemned for wearing makeup, just because i enjoy wearing it.
Why is wearing a nice day dress classed as "Dressed up" and the need to therefore put me down.

I have a teenage daughter. She see's my job here blogging, she sees my makeup and clothes and thinks that this is cool (sorta.. I mean I don't think she'd admit that out-loud.. 'cos y'know teenagers are too cool for that ;).
But.
I always tell her how beautiful she is without the need for makeup. I always tell her material gain is nothing in the course of happiness. I constantly try to raise her to be loyal, caring and considerate.
She has suffered at the hand of cruel mean teenage girls, and each time she does I tell her she is better than that, and that as she grows older she will see how women are no longer out to attack you, but will be there for you.
I honestly hope i'm not wrong. I hope as women we can stand together, no matter what our preferences are, and raise each other up.

As much as another persons opinion shouldn't matter, and on the greater scheme of things it really doesn't. When I put it in to context: I have a loving gorgeous husband who i adore, a beautiful blended family and a job i enjoy, so why does it bother me?
Because in this day and age, women are constantly bombarded with the media telling us :
We are too fat too thin, too tall too short, we need makeup, we need to be natural, we can do this but not that.
Surely when the world is firing at us from every angle, the real women: you, I and everyone in-between, should take a united stance together?

I got in touch with a few megababes to see what they thought on exactly this.

Here's what they said:

Vicki of Honestmum.com
''My feminist Mum gave me a badge to wear aged 4 which read, 'Women together are strong'. I've been living by that motto since childhood. I'm lucky that my Mum and other incredible women in my family were my blueprints for all the friendships and work relationships with women which followed. I'm a real girls' girl-always have been, always will be. I refuse to believe women's default is bitchiness because I've only experienced it as the exception here.

I say to others, be the example for others to follow-your kids, girls and boys. Don't talk about others behind their backs-if there's a problem, be candid and discuss things calmly and honesty. If something is consistently negative and destructive, walk away with your head held high.

I think, fundamentally, friendship boils down to three things: love, trust and communication- as with all relationships. My life is so rich thanks to the women (and men) in it.'

Jane of My Midlife Fashion

Sadly I think most women will tell you that they've been on the receiving end of negativity/catty comments from others, which generally always stems from jealousy or their own insecurities. However this knowledge doesn't stop the hurt & can be so damaging to the individual.
But for every small minded person there are a lot more genuine & amazing ladies out there. Who are fiercely loyal & will support & encourage you to blossom & grow.
For when women come together & support each other it's a powerful & beautiful thing. United we're a force to be reckoned with & anything is possible.

Vicki and Jane have articulated exactly what I am talking about.

From this negative experience I am choosing to be positive (granted this is after the tears and anger.. but I am only human, and of course learning daily!).

Be open minded with each other ladies. Be encouraging and thoughtful and at peace with each other.

Respect for one another should be our default.

So here's my pledge.
I pledge to not speak badly of another women. I will not scrutinise someones choices. I  will give compliments freely each day and build others up wherever I can.

Who's with me?

Comment below if you stand with like minded women against scrutiny and judgement.
Have you ever been at the unfortunate hand of scrutiny and judgement for just being yourself?

Wanderlust: The Start Of Collecting Memories Not Things

Wanderlust: The urge to travel and see the world.
Its an incredible thing to travel, to open your eyes and your mind and  to new places, people and experiences.
If you've been reading here a while you'll know I was previously a Travel Agent for many years, and before my children came along, I would often have 3 holidays a year, each to different destinations.

Sometimes as a 'grown up' with all the responsibilities of raising children and seeing the family has everything it needs years will fly past, and within a blink of an eye, you haven't been outside of your country for 7 years..

This year my Husband and I have made a pact: No Christmas presents for each other. We need for nothing material and so have decided to put our funds in to a trip. A trip for the soul.
To do just this:

Trying to live more minimally is never ever easy, especially around Christmas where here in the western world we are constantly bombarded with the need to purchase more and more.
But this year we won't be. This year we shall out choosing a date, a destination and start to plan some memories.

So, the next question of course.. Where shall we choose?
I was hoping you could help.

Here are my top 5 places to to visit in Europe

1. PARIS

Oh pretty Paris, this place sure is spectacular. I've been here 3 or 4 times, and yet never bore of this beautiful city. Even though i've been many times, I've never experienced it with my husband. To hold hands and wander the cobbled streets of the Latin quarter, to view the Mona Lisa and climb the Eiffel Tower with man I love is a definite calling for me. There is something distinctly romantic about this city, like you can just feel it. Have you ever been? Would you agree?
And with great hotels like Citizen M making it easier than ever to stay, Paris could be calling us.

2. ICELAND

To see the Aurora Borealis would be a major tick off the ol' bucket list. This natural beauty is a must see at one point in my life. On the right night at the right time you can see the northen lights from Scotland, Norway, Finland as well as Iceland.
But if I were to choose, Iceland would be my choice. With the Blue Lagoon and The Golden Circle to also visit, there are plenty of things calling me to this beautiful icy country.

3. DUBROVNIK
Croatia has become the hidden jewel in the Mediterranean. A place ram packed with history and character. With its distinctive old town and baroque buildings, some dating back to 1600's it is a history buffs dream, whilst also offering a plethora of shops, bars restaurants for the modern traveller. I would love to visit here soon as it gains popularity year on year, i would like to see it before it gets too popular which inevitably changes things. Croatia is also still in the Croatian Kunar, making eating out and purchases still very good value for money. It is also a brilliant spot for taking day trips and visiting surrounding areas such as Bosnia, Kolocep and more.

4. SICILY
Its a sad state of affairs when your husbands family come from a beautiful country but you haven't yet been. I mean i've been with my husband ten years, and hasn't been since he was 13 i believe. So i would very much like to rectify that. His family comes from a small town in the centre of Sicily, with traditional cobbled streets, and houses built in to the hillside.
Sicily is a beautiful country, and a trip to Palermo would be top of my list, as well as the possible venture to Mount Etna! What a spectacular site, to see one of the most active volcanoes.

5. BRUGES

A complete chocolate box of a city. Filled with beautiful canals to stroll along, cobbled streets and fairy-tale-esque houses. With historical and heritage tours there is plenty to see and learn. If you like churches, basilicas and general holy buildings, this has them in abundance, plus the night tours are apparently not to be missed, with floods of lights filling the town showing it off in all its spectacular glory. I've heard the Bruge Christmas Markets are some of the finest, with trinkets and chocolate for all. Also Belgium does the BEST waffles.

I thought this list would help me but I just want to visit them all, I have complete wanderlust and the urge to see new places, share new experiences and collect great memories.

So tell me, where would you if you had the chance, or you are in-fact going somewhere?
